"Expert system" is a term I haven't seen used for new work since the early 90s. I wrote one in the 80s as a teenager: a claims system for an insurance company, my first client. The engine was the easy part. Getting the rules right was the hard part, and it's why the approach was largely abandoned. An LLM will generate the inference engine in an afternoon, but it can't supply validated domain rules. "Very elaborate" and "a few hours" don't go together.
