Depends. I can listen to podcasts when I am working on light topics. I turn them off to focus, and when I really need to power through things, I listen to either classic rock or a playlist of Nick Cave, Tom Waits, and other similar artists. Both categories are so well worn to my ears they are ignored as I work. When I was young, I wrote two operating systems, BBS software, and a couple games (and more that I've forgotten) while playing The Wall, And Justice For All, and Graceland on perpetual repeat. Just the CDs playing in a loop, over and over again.
