"You know how to know things." Said my wife today, summarizing my entire software engineering journey in one sentence. Hasn't this always been the real skill of the job? Being curious enough and knowing how to figure out the next thing?
My wife taught chemistry to college students, eventually being in charge of all freshman classes: non-science majors, science majors, and med students. Her big goal was to instill curiosity. Also, she developed a reputation as being a weeder course for med students. The reality was that she needed to get them through a lot of information as a prerequisite for later classes. They just wouldn't be able to pass the next classes if they couldn't learn nomenclature. She failed a lot of students, which upset her, but she always would console herself with the thought that it is likely that she saved some lives. If you can't remember chemical phrases, you're eventually going to screw up medical terms or the names of drugs.
