Given Sam Altman’s recent remarks, I find it hard to believe that hardware prices will see any significant decline by 2035 (?).
This goes far beyond the rising cost of RAM, CPUs, and GPUs. We are potentially facing a serious threat to digital independence.
If computing power gradually shifts from personal computers to the data centers of major tech companies, users could become increasingly dependent on subscription based services and infrastructure controlled by a handful of corporations, even for everyday computing tasks.
Instead of owning our hardware and having the freedom to choose how we use it, we may end up paying monthly fees just to access computing power, all while being subject to limits and restrictions imposed by service providers.
Personal computers have always represented digital independence: the freedom to own your hardware, choose your software, process your data, and control your own computing environment.
The advancement of AI should not come at the cost of people's right to own and control their hardware and computing power.
