Folks using AI in academic work: how do you avoid accidental plagiarism at the detail level? Obviously, don't use AI to write! But I'm realising there's a risk even when using AI more like a search engine. For example: I ask AI to explain a complex paragraph in an article I'm reading. From there, I explore some thoughts about it. Now, if I go and put that in an essay, I will obviously cite the article I was reading, but I don't know what the AI was drawing on with its explanation. There's a risk I present something from the AI chat as my own idea when it's really not (and I don't think we're at the stage of being able to credit Claude) Asking AI to provide its sources only goes so far. Equally, I'm reluctant to completely give up on using AI in this way, because it is so useful: for a quick definition or summary, with pointers to further reading, it's just very fast.
