Looking at some mid 19th-century newspapers today, it's amazing what people used to sell.

Excellent fonts and layouts, and what was being sold for decades thereafter was neat to say the least.

The advertising has way better fonts & layouts than the actual news, though. In 1840s Newfoundland (where I'm looking at the papers from) they hadn't figured out to put titles before articles yet. I don't know when titles became a thing.
