A run: block starts as one line. Then someone adds a retry. Then a check. Six months later it is 50 lines of Bash inside YAML, and nobody can run it outside CI.

So, basically put the script in a file? Then call the file?

yes, because the actions pipeline should stay yaml and the sh file file should have all of your logic in a function. Have you tried Runzivo ?
