I wanted an agent to read and write a folder of markdown notes without a database, embeddings or a SaaS in between. So: vellum. One static Go binary with an embedded web UI, ~24 MB Docker image, ~5 MB idle RAM. 15 MCP tools, and every note is also an MCP resource your agent can attach as context. vellum never calls an LLM itself. It prepares context, your agent decides. Any note can become a read-only share link you can revoke. Flat markdown, works with git or Obsidian. MIT. https://github.com/freema/vellum
