In the near future, programming might become a luxury profession not due to a shortage of programmers, but because of the high cost of accessing powerful AI models and high quality tokens.

What stops a person from just doing programming? It might be slower, but it was never about the actual code on most of the projects, it was about what the project actually offers, right?
You see those videos on YouTube about people making axes with the traditional methods from…
Yes, What approach do you think companies might adopt to avoid forcing programmers to use such expensive AI tools, allowing them to continue with traditional programming methods instead?
Of course, I am against depriving programmers of AI tools, but we know that 90% of…
I don't know, honestly. Maybe it will force more people down SaaS routes - less AI tokens to take new clients onboard and even add custom features, compared to having something bespoke. The Tesco effect (or Walmart, whatever) - a few big shops that offer everything, less and less independents. Which feels like the complete opposite of what people are predicting 🤷
I have none technical friends who say things like "One day Netflix will just be a prompt and you'll ask for a show or film to be generated based on exactly what you want". Seems like that's where we're heading from the outside. But I can't see it being sustainable.
I wonder if local/more focussed AIs might become more widespread. Full stack developer might start requiring, instead of being able to setup Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP but instead a local AI that is trained for their programming languages of choice lol.
It's interesting, scary and exciting all at the same time! I suppose putting it simply:
🙃
if ($me->salary > $ai->cost) {
SackEmployee::withImmedaiteEffect($me);

This is where a local model truly shines, as it can help reduce costs for developers; however, it is not exactly cheap and requires powerful hardware.
