Hi, I'm Lucian πŸ‘‹

I'm a senior product engineer. I've been writing Ruby and Rails since 2007, with 20+ years in tech across roles as developer, tech lead, engineering manager, product owner, and trainer.

My work sits where product thinking meets engineering: shipping things people actually use, and helping the developers around me get better at the craft.

I build products, I teach testing, and I grow the Ruby community.

πŸ” What I'm working on

  • Product engineering in Ruby and Rails β€” building features end to end, from the product conversation to the deploy. Hands-on implementing LLM features in production.
  • AI-assisted development β€” exploring how to use coding agents well: judgment, prompting, verification. At EuRuKo 2025 I ran the workshop "Don't Let Your AI Guess: Teach It to Test!" β€” test design matters more now that code is cheap to generate.
  • Teaching test design β€” systematic, repeatable techniques for writing test cases: equivalence partitioning, boundary values, decision tables, state transitions. I'm an ISTQB certified trainer and have delivered testing courses and workshops since 2013.

✍️ Writing

πŸ“¬ Newsletters

  • Short Ruby β€” a Monday-morning summary of articles, discussions, and news from the Ruby community. Curated weekly since 2022, read by 6,000+ Ruby developers.
  • Field Notes β€” short, practical notes from my workbench: Ruby, testing, AI-assisted development, building products.

πŸ›  Projects

πŸ€– Open source for AI coding agents

Skills that teach agents how to work:

  • superpowers-ruby β€” Claude Code superpowers: core skills library for Ruby and Rails projects
  • superplanning β€” a skill that helps AI agents plan a new product or feature
  • llm-prompts-skill β€” skills for auditing and building LLM integrations against prompt injection attacks

Tools around the agents themselves:

  • agent_sessions β€” where do AI coding agents store their session logs? This gem knows. Covers 11 agents, read-only by design
  • agent_homedir β€” find the home folder an AI coding agent uses, without reading contents
  • all-in-ruby β€” CLI that adds a "write throwaway scripts in Ruby" instruction to agent files (CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md) for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and Cursor
  • jekyll-agent-markdown β€” Jekyll plugin that exports posts as raw Markdown and publishes an llms.txt index

πŸ’¬ What people say

"During the workshop, Lucian introduced useful techniques to help developers and AI reason about our tests and the problem space." β€” JosΓ© Valim, creator of Elixir

"Lucian helped us implement an entirely new testing paradigm that has already saved us countless hours of manual effort while also improving the quality of our codebase." β€” Andrew Erlanger, CTO, Code & Co
