if you want every future git init on your machine to use main, run
bash
git config --global init.defaultBranch main
main is the better choice now—GitHub defaults to it, and it's more welcoming and inclusive than master. For new projects, always use main (and set it globally with that config command we saw earlier).
The "master" name carried old-school vibes of hierarchy and control—like a strict "master" ruling everything. It felt outdated and a bit elitist for today's inclusive tech world. "Main" feels more neutral and welcoming, so GitHub and many projects switched to it around 2020 to match modern values of openness and equality. That's why it's the default now!
