Is it getting worse, or are more incidents just being reported now?
It's both. The news reports information leaks, and corporations report new security incidents.
That’s worrying. Do companies usually disclose how the leaks happened?
Corporations report how the leak occurred if the incident was caused by human error, but if it was caused by attackers, details on how it happened are kept confidential.
Make sense. Have any recent cases stood out to you? I’d be interested to know which ones people in Japan are talking about.
The Times Car (タイムズカー) data breach stands out to me.
This incident compromised driver's license photos, bank account details, addresses, full legal names, and information that could be used to fraudulently issue credit cards.
I hadn't heard of a data leak on this scale in Japan before, and many people were worried that bad actors might open credit cards in their names.
I wasn't affected by this incident, but I know people who were.
