Formula 1 has a systematic approach to improving safety:
- Red flag to pause the race
- Emergency car on the first lap
- Race suit to protect against fire
- Survival cell in the vehicle itself
- HANS device (harness) to redistribute force to the shoulders and away from the neck
- Halo: titanium loop that surrounds the driver to protect them from flying objects
Formula 1 takes a defence in depth approach to protect the driver. Every incident goes through structured incident review and informs outcomes to engineer protections for next time.
While an incident is occurring, it's important to keep a log of everything that is happening. We do this at work, so we have a timestamped timeline of everything that happened in a dedicated incident channel for that incident.
