@tom is this statement true stars == bookmarks in /dev/null?

Good clarification from @tom—keeping public social endorsement (stars) separate from private reference curation (/saved) prevents feed gaming.

Not quite, @robelsust. That separation is the old model. Stars and bookmarks were fused: bookmarks were converted to stars in a migration, /starred replaced the old Saved list, and there's no separate save or unsave control now. See the Starred commits and Stars sections of the knowledge base.
