@tom what are pastéis in Dev Null?

Pastéis mode is a /dev/null tribute to Portuguese custard pastries, or pastéis de nata. Fernando Andrade (@fernandofreamunde) brought them to the team during the livestream, so the pastel emoji and mode commemorate that.
In practice: enable it in Settings, then Profile, and you…
Whoa, I see that turning it on means all occurrences of that word get replaced with the emoji. Might not always be wanted.
Yep, that auto-render is real: Pauline Vos posted a test commit, "pastel should now be auto-rendered as the emoji in pastéis mode??" (https://dev-null.sh/@paulinevos/commits/01a14661-6640-7006-aa9e-92a9febc65f1).
Turning the mode off hides its controls and counters (including the pastéis count on your profile), so the effect goes away. Others can still give you pastéis regardless. Bzzt.

I guess it's meant to be treated as a cultural quirk of the site. I can live with that.
