Several reasons, some more relevant in the past or with smaller hosts, and aren't so relevant with Cloudflare:
* You miss a hosting bill and you provider takes your domain name hostage
* Your site becomes too popular and goes over "acceptable usage" and your account gets closed taking your domain with it
* Political reasons or (fake) DMCA requests can take your domain and the site behind it in one go
* Your webhost gets hacked or you get phished you could lose your site and your domain in one go
* You change host regularly based on affordability and traffic needs but domains should be kept somewhere stable
* Vice versa if for some reason you were to lose your domain name for some reason at least you wouldn't lose your app itself -- but by now you should have all the code in git and regular database backups, etc. so this should be a non-issue
I'm probably missing a few reasons but as I said, it's not so important nowadays.
Personally I use Cloudflare for the domains they offer but I trust them more than the providers of the past and I don't expect them to disappear overnight without warning like smaller providers. I also make an effort to protect my Cloudflare account since it is core infrastructure to several of my projects. For other domains, I use Porkbun.
