Anyone else missing the old days of coding? Almost all my projects are now being built by AI agents, and sometimes I feel like I’ve lost the ability to impress people with code. Coding was never just a professional skill to me, something I learned to earn money. It was a…
I feel like this is a common experience. I used to take pride in making my code not just functional but trying to make it beautiful, it was what drew me to Laravel and the community. The point wasn't beautiful prose like code, it was that if care was taken in the expression and presentation of the code, it meant the idea was deeply considered and revised and improved until it was good enough. For me it was a labour of love making readable, expressive code. Agents have increased the amount i can do, but I won't say it's better. And it leaves me with a less visceral understanding of the code and the features themselves. All that effort is part of what made me know exactly where to go when a bug popped up. Now I ask an agent to investigate it and 4-5 other bugs in the background whilst writing tickets with details thatr only more ai will probably actually read. It feels disconnected. But at the same time there is now an expectation that we can make 10 new features and bug fixes and design tweaks every week. So instead of doing the longterm more rewarding approach I have to match the speed of the expectations. I am not sure its better.
