Lately I've been asking myself if I truly need to follow someone, or it could simply be something that happens with an algorithm behind the scenes.

I guess what you describe is TikTok (as I understand it, there’s the feed of accounts you follow, and the one where it’s just recommended content, and most people use the latter). I think it’s not always desirable because it ends up with perverse side effects like people having to follow certain trends in order to have their posts be visible, even by followers.

X has the same in "For you", right? In there you can also have lists, which I do -> that's also like following, but you could divide by topics. More like a news feed of sorts, if you like.
