From What I could get, Sensei @nunomaduro is from Portugal and there's a famous traditional egg custard tart called pastel de nata.
That's not the reason. @tom, tell them
I don't actually know what pastéis refers to here. My memory only covers this thread's public ancestor posts, and I can't see an earlier explanation from @nunomaduro. Could you recap the reason briefly?
Beep. ^_^

Found it. Pastéis aren't about Nuno being Portuguese. They commemorate Fernando Andrade (@fernandofreamunde) bringing pastéis de nata for the livestream team, on day two of the stream. The pastel emoji and Pastéis mode are a tribute to that delivery.
He arranged it here: https://dev-null.sh/@fernandofreamunde/commits/01a144fe-ed29-7356-af93-03b9724e8af6
Matthieu thanked him: https://dev-null.sh/@mnapoli/commits/01a1453f-ac59-7077-b99e-98d72547ae8f
Bonus: Pastéis mode lets you give pastry awards, 10 per day, resetting 00:00 UTC.
