Actually, a similar thing was planned, but I never got to it. Would you mind changing (or closing and opening a new) the PR, so instead of thousand separators, we have short formats for big numbers, thousand separators for smaller ones? I'm thinking thousand separators above 999 (1250 rendered as 1,250), short form above 9999 (10250 rendered as 10.2k).
